While he was waiting trial he learned that his book has been purchased by Viking Press and immediately began to finish it. He managed to complete the book by that Christmas and in June of nineteen eighty two the editing was finally done.
Robert Mason was convicted of smuggling and was given a five year sentence in a minimum security prison but was fortunately allowed to remain free pending an appeal. He was incarcerated towards the end of August nineteen eight three and was released in May two years later. A few days before he was incarcerated his book was published and it got a glowing review from the New York Times. He was interviewed many times and the book was to be made into a film and directed by John Carpenter, unfortunately it never got that far.
This book became both hardcover as well as paperback and was a best seller, all while he was still imprisoned. He was not able to continue writing while in prison but later published two other novels, Weapon and Solo. He also wrote a second memoir of Chickenhawk with the subtitle Back in the World.
