What You Should Know Before Installing LED Underwater Lights IL

By Donna Wagner

Underwater boat illuminations have gained a great deal in popularity over the last several years as more and more boat owners look for ways to set their boat apart from the crowd. While it's true that many boat owners install underwater lights purely due to their novelty and "coolness" factors, many boat owners have come to realize their practical benefits as well. Installing underwater lights IL does indeed add a unique appearance to even a plain vanilla cruiser at night, and colored illuminations even more so.

Surface lighting will sharpen any image and is more effective when not shining directly on to the water. Underwater lighting can deliver absolutely stunning atmospheric results, illuminating fish, plants and features such as fountains and waterfalls. In case you are lighting a considerably large area, then this often means using high voltage mains lighting.

Do not light up the entire pond, this will upset your fish. However, a less expensive and easier to install low-voltage system using a transformer is sufficient to light a group of plants or a small feature. If you have a lot of these to illuminate, then several of these systems may be easier and cheaper to install. Install transformers indoors or at least in a garden shed or garage, so that only the low voltage cable is used in the garden.

In addition to that, you need to have the right quantity of illuminations to prevent darkness. Small and medium sized boats have 4-6 illuminations. These illuminations are placed in the corners so that they can cover the maximum area. There is yet another aspect that you ought to be careful about. The illuminations should be fixed on poles and placed at a height. This prevents them from interacting with the splashing water which enters the boat.

Although there are many obvious good reasons for installing hull lights, the choice of which type of hull illuminations to install can be a bit more difficult to make. There are several different types, and each has its benefits and drawbacks that need to be considered. Things like the type of vessel, the materials the light housing are made from, the type of lamps use, and the power they consume can all play a critical role in determining just which illuminations are the best for a given application.

Also floating illuminations can be very effective and submerged lights reveal the underwater world normally hidden during daylight hours by the glare of the sun. Try experimenting with different effects. Move lights around and train them on different features. This is a lot easier with the low-voltage systems of course.

Hull lights will also be most frequently used while at anchor, so it is perhaps wisest to choose illuminations which will fill your minimum expectations without producing a huge drain on your battery banks. Finally, maintenance and bulb replacement must be taken into consideration as it often involves added expense and difficult procedures. Therefore, illuminations that can last for an extended period with as little maintenance as possible are a wise choice.

For durability, strength of illumination and safety reasons, use only good quality purpose made equipment when using electricity outdoors. If you already have pump or filtration equipment in place then the power supply may be easily available to you but you may still need help in adding a lighting system to it. If in doubt, get professional advice.
